Pen Holder - from Toilet Paper Rolls

Hello Everyone,
Its been long since I wrote a post about Up-cycling. Hence today's post is an up cycling project I made a few days back.
One fine day my father in law was doing some of his office work at home and he felt the need of a pen holder on his computer table. He asked my mother in law to put up an old glass there, which would do the needful. That was the time I thought I should make one for him, which looks nice on his table and add some life to it ;)
So, i thought why not use something which I was about to throw??!! Yes the cores of the toilet/tissue paper rolls. Once they are empty we throw them away, but i could see them as the new Pen Holder!!!

Here's how it turned out to be. I am sorry i forgot to take the step by step photographs! But don't worry its too easy to make hence my step by step (without pics) tutorial will surely help you make one!
The final Result:

Material Required
Toilet Paper Roll (Core) OR Cardboard - using which you can make such rolls.
1 piece of cardboard for making the base (take any like from your shoe box - because you are going to cover it!)
Designer paper or fabric which ever you wish to cover these rolls with.
Stuff for decorating - Here I have used my handmade flowers and ready made leaves and pollen's, some buttons and ribbon from my stash. You can use anything you like.

Step 1:
Cover the cores in the paper or fabric of your choice neatly. You can cover one, two, three or more as per your requirement. You can also cut them in different heights as per your needs and to add a bit of drama to your designer pen holder ;)
Also i have added washi tape to cover the top end edges of the cores. This makes them look very neat and guess what... its easy!! :-D

Step 2:
Cut a base on which you will place these cores on. The shape and size it totally on your discretion. I have cut a Rectangular piece and later chopped of the edges. The base is needed to cover up the other end of the cores so that they can hold whatever you put in them.
Once cut cover it up in desired paper or fabric.

Step 3:
Glue the Cores on the ready base (made in Step 2) in the manner you like it!

Step 4:
Decorate as per your wish!!!

Your lovely Pen holder is ready to hold whatever you like! Do let me know if you liked this post. and dont forget to share the pictures of the stuff you make! A lot of people get inspired by them and i love it too!!
For any further queries do leave a comment below, i ll be happy to respond! Till then,

Card with Handmade Painting

Hello Everyone!

Here is a card that I have made using a painting that I made. It is actually a copy from one of the stamps that are available in countries outside India. As I do not have the stamps, I thought why not draw them and paint them my self to add them to my cards!! I have colored this sketch using water color pencils and then outlining the whole thing with a 0.05 fine tip black pen.
I hope you like it! So here we go!! The first attempt...

Do let me know whether you like it or not.... Also you can place orders for any of my cards (already posted on the blog or custom made) Just leave a comment below and with your contact details and I will get in touch with you. Or email me at contact.pankharts@gmail.com.

Quilling Tutorial 1 - Introduction

Hi Everyone,

I have been getting requests to post a tutorial on the basics of quilling and how to start if one is interested in learning. So, I jotted down in this post the introduction to quilling, which will help you to understand:
what is quilling?
Supplies Required
Basic shapes
Further in coming posts I will post certain basic and then advanced tutorials for quilling.

Let's Start!!!

INTRODUCTION
Paper Quilling or Paper filigree is an art or craft form, where the artist creates intricate designs shaping and gluing strips of paper. This art requires a lot of time, patience and neatness; but gives amazing results! Quilling can be used to make variety of items like: Handmade cards, decorating different items (boxes, gifts, photo frames etc), pictures, handmade jewelry, three dimensional miniatures, etc.

MATERIAL/SUPPLIES REQUIRED FOR STARTER

1. Paper or Paper Strips -
Usually now a days Quilling paper strips are available on any craft or stationery store. These strips are available in various widths like 3mm, 1cm, 2cm etc (as shown in the photograph).

We should choose the width of the strips based on our project's requirement. For ex. for cards usually strips with lesser width are used for convenience. For Folded roses strips with wider width are preferred.

In case ready made paper strips are not available, you can make these strips using a double side colored paper and cutting it down into equal width strips like 2mm, 5mm, 1cm, 2cm as per your project requirement.

2. Quilling Tool
The Quilling tool is a tool with a metal tip having a slot at the top. This slot helps to hold the paper strip in place while rolling it.

3. Glue
Usually preferred is a wet glue, which give you some time before it dries to make any adjustments in case required.

4.Scale/Ruler
If you are cutting your paper strips ruler is very important for correct measurements.
There is another scale/ruler available in market with different sizes of circles and shape in it. It is also a very useful tool for making similar size petals or any shape.

BASIC SHAPES

The picture below showcases the 15 basic shapes that a learner should start with. Using these you can make a lot of basic flowers, leaves and shapes.

This is it for this post. I will be back with more posts on quilling soon. If you want to know anything specific, do leave me a comment. I will be happy to answer. Till then,
Have Fun and Keep Crafting!
